Be Aware when Driving through Wichita’s Road Work and Construction Zones

Spring is already here with summer just around the corner, along with fair weather comes the start of road construction and maintenance projects all over Wichita, Kansas. From diversions to lane closures and poor surface conditions, it all turns into daily struggles for motorists.

Unfortunately, even if you know a route better than the one at the back of your hand, any construction work along the way can throw up surprises that can be dangerous and even catastrophic. Continue reading to know how to be safe when driving through work zones and road construction sites across Wichita.

What’s causing all those accidents at road construction sites and work zones?

According to KSDOT, over 1,100 work zone collisions were reported across the state in 2022 with 13 people killed and left more than 250 injured.

What’s shocking is 73% of these collisions occurred during daylight hours and 90% happened in fair weather conditions meaning that poor visibility was certainly not a mitigating factor.

In fact, 88% of these collisions were attributed to driver-related circumstances, and inattention was at the top of the list of these factors. Speeding, following too closely, sudden lane changes, and right-of-way violations were also among the top contributing factors.

Where can you find information about road construction and work zones across Wichita?

  • The KanDrive interactive map: This site will give you the lowdown on all current and ongoing road construction sites and work zone road closures.
  • The KSDOT resources: This site has several resources that offer information on road construction sites across the City of Wichita and Sedgwick County.

What can you do to be safe when driving through road construction sites and work zones?

  1. Expect the unexpected: Vehicles and equipment are constantly moved around in the work zones, to add to this the poor road surface conditions, plus other motorists who are just as overwhelmed by it all. It is easy to understand why even a few seconds of inattentiveness can cost you dearly when driving through these areas. Be present and keep your eyes on the road. Do away with all distractions including music and even hands-free cellular and GPS devices. This is one of the best ways to ensure that sudden obstacles, lane changes, and graveled surfaces do not catch you off guard.
  2. Slow down: Poor surface conditions translate to deficits in vehicle control and braking power. Now, imagine how adding even a slight speed increase to this mix can quickly pitch the situation against you. Reduced speeds are in place for a reason. Workers are often just feet from traffic, and the uneven pavement or lane changes can make maneuvering unpredictable. In a work zone, go 5-10 mph slower than the posted limit because a bit late is always better than never.
  3. Give yourself more reaction time: Keep your distance from other motorists and control the urge to follow too closely just because you want to get out of the work zone as soon as possible. This way you give yourself more time to react to sudden moves made by other motorists.
  4. Follow the signs and the flaggers: Construction zones are filled with signage for a reason.  Pay close attention to the signs, cones, and barriers indicating construction zones and lane closures, reduced speeds, and upcoming merges. Flaggers, those individuals with signs or paddles directing traffic, have the same authority as a traffic signal. Obeying their directions is crucial for smooth traffic flow and worker safety. Come to a complete stop if instructed and proceed only when signaled to do so. Ignoring these signals can lead to car wrecks or fines, so it’s crucial to adhere to posted speed limits and lane restrictions.
  5. Announce yourself to other motorists: Road construction zones often have reduced visibility, especially during dawn, dusk, or inclement weather. Turning on your headlights will make your car more visible to other drivers and workers, improving safety for everyone.
  6. Merge early and yield to others: Merge into the appropriate lane well before reaching a lane closure or merge point. Use your turn signal to indicate your intentions and yield to vehicles already in the merging lane. Be patient and allow others to merge smoothly, preventing unnecessary congestion and conflicts on the road.
  7. Plan ahead and be informed: Before hitting the road, check for any planned construction or roadwork along your route. Planning your journey in advance can help you find alternative routes, saving you time and reducing stress.

But, despite everything, sometimes accidents just happen!
